15 Feb SEO… Some Exciting Opportunities.
You MUST have or get SEO! So the experts say… but why?
Search Engine Optimisation or SEO has been a buzz word for years and it’s a term thrown around in many circles, often without any substance behind it. This article aims to clarify the importance of SEO and why everyone with a website should consider investing some of their available budget into it.
Since we have all became “googled” and to find something on the internet you should “google it”, I will use Google as a reference-point in this post.
Google, if you are unaware, is the world’s leading search engine… by a long shot. Hence when you ask someone a question they don’t have the answer to, their likely response will be to “google it”.
Google, and other search engines, work on complex algorithms that scroll through the internet and pick up keywords (among other things) in files and documents and return page results (SERPs) accordingly.
The first page of Google is what the real estate industry would refer to as location, location, location… and if you’re not constantly ranking on page 1 of Google for keywords for your industry or niche used by people when searching the internet, then chances are no one will find you.
This is where SEO comes into play… usually at a cost mind you.
But to live by the ocean and have thousands of people drive past and see you, you need to spend some money… if you know what I mean…
So how do you do this for your website?
Not an easy question to answer… simply because there’s no straight forward or simply way to do this. The algorithms used by Google and other search engines are constantly changing – in excess of 500 changes every year! And it’s basically been impossible to workout what exactly makes up Google’s algorithms anyway (and Google isn’t about to disclose this info either).
Think of SEO the same way you would when looking at buying a house. You know what your budget is and you have an idea of your ideal location. Sometimes your location and budget are in alignment and other times they’re not.
So if your budget allows, your purchasing power gives you more scope to choose where to live. Similarly with SEO, the greater your budget the more you can invest in SEO to ensure your website ranks high in SERPs – page 1 on Google being prime position.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t have good SEO if you only have a small budget to work with. Just like you can purchase a great property on a small budget… you just need to know where to look and the best way to invest your money. And if you’re in business already, you’ll understand the importance of ROI.
If you have a large budget to work with, chances are your organisation is already very successful, and business savvy with a number of resources at hand to find you the best solutions to improve your SEO.
The remainder of this post is more closely targeted at smaller enterprises looking to grow their business, start-ups and individuals who are just getting started with their website.
We know that Google is the most popular and highly used search engine, so, logically it would make sense to use the most popular and highly used website builder as a starting point right?
It also happens to be ideally suited for SEO due to it’s open source platform, allowing for easy customisation and full ownership of the site. You may have heard of it before… it’s called WordPress. But if you haven’t that’s ok you can read more about it hear.
Like Google, WordPress websites have the lion’s share with almost one-third of all websites on the internet being WordPress sites, as well as making up almost two-thirds of all internet sites (eg: blogs).
Why am telling you this for? If you are budget sensitive, but want the best SEO available, then it’s worth considering looking at using third-party providers that have a symbiotic relationship with one another to best optimise your website’s reach without having to fork out too much $$$.
A dedicated hosting site, such as WPEngine, that only hosts WordPress websites, in conjunction with a CDN (Content Delivery Network) – our recommendation is Cloudflare, as it is much more than just a CDN, and has a free option, will improve your site ranking in SERPs as they will optimise your websites efficiency for very little outlay. Which means you can increase your spend on keywords, AdWords or other marketing tools to increase traffic to your site.
